Tec Tec Tec VPRO500
I think most golfers have now come around to the fact that laser range finders are the way to go. No charging, no annual fees and no dealing with a phone app are just a few of the reasons why I only use a laser range finder.
The downside is that laser range finders are expensive. Like $400 expensive. Still, if you are a hard core golfer and someone who does not lose things I still would argue that your best bet is to go out and get a Bushnell or similar high end device that is rock solid and super accurate.
Back to the $400 price tag. That’s a big number and it is not for everyone’s budget. Moreover, if you are a casual 10 times a year golfer, it just does not make a lot of sense. The good news is that there are some less expensive alternatives. One such example is the Tec Tec Tec VPRO500 which is one of the best sellers on Amazon.
I have now used the Tec Tec Tec VPRO500 for three rounds. For this review I will focus on four characteristics: Accuracy, ease of use, durability and value.
Accuracy:
I tested the Tec Tec Tec VPRO500 against my Bushnell Pro X2 which I consider best in class. I also tested it against a few other models that my playing partners were using. The Tec Tec Tec VPRO500 was pretty consistently about 2 yards different at around 150 yards. Sometimes longer sometimes shorter but rarely the same. So for those looking for pin point accuracy I might hesitate. However, if you are a mid-handicapper, frankly 2 yards is not going to make a difference in your game.
Ease of use:
One thing I was surprised to find was that the Tec Tec Tec PRO500 picked up the flag very quickly even when the pin did not have a reflector or when there were trees behind the pin. The inside view finder has large numbers making the process of picking up a number quite easy (even if that number was off by 2 yards)
.
The Tec Tec Tec, fits nicely in your hand and is quite light weight. It comes with a case that can be strapped to your belt although I am not sure if any self-respecting golfer would do that. Like my Bushnell case it has a fast loop closure that makes it easy to take it in and out of the case. However, the case is not nearly as robust as higher priced models and lacks a way for you to easily attach it to your golf bag or push cart.
Durability:
I have only had the Tec Tec Tec VPRO for a few weeks so I cannot attest to its long term durability but it does come with a 1-year warranty. What I can say is that is does not feel rock solid. For example, the plastic case is very light weight and the seam that runs down the middle reminds me of molded plastic toys. That is not to say it won’t last, but it is significantly less robust than a Bushnell. Again, we are talking about a $140 laser range finder which is less than 1/2 the price of my top-of-the-line model, so I would not expect it to meet those standards. However, to say that the Tec Tec Tec is the same quality as a Bushnell is simply not the case.
Value:
$140 for a laser range finder is seriously an insanely low price, making it ideal for a gift or for the golfer who does not expect too much. Again, I cannot speak to how long it will last, but it does have a 1-year warranty making it a fairly safe purchase.
