Galvin Green Lars Interface Jacket
After 6 years of reviewing golf apparel, there was still one item that I was missing. In part it was a conscience decision because I was not sure how useful it would be. The item in question: a short sleeve windbreaker. My confusion revolved around the fact that typically it is your arms that get cold so why would I have a jacket that was not long sleeve?
So for my 1st foray into the world of a short sleeve windbreaker, I figured there would be no better place to start than with the Galvin Green Lars Interface jacket. Galvin Green is widely known for their high end rain gear which is not only bullet proof, but extremely well fitting and good looking. Personally, I own a number of Galvin Green items including a polo, shorts and mid-piece layer, all of which have lasted many seasons and have been very reliable.
I got the Galvin Green Lars Interface golf jacket in late spring when the weather was still turning and cool mornings would turn into warm afternoons. It was on such a day that I first wore the Galvin Green Lars Interface. As it turned out there was a very useful, albeit small, temperature window that existed that day that was perfect for such a garment.
Contrary to my initial belief, throwing a short sleeve windbreaker on over a polo actually provides a nice layer of warmth without any of the bulk associated with a pullover or jacket. In all likelihood it’s a layer that you will probably wear for less than 18 holes but it will fill that temperature gap that is common in the morning hours. In other words, the short sleeve jacket is a “nice to have” and not a “have to have”. With that said, if you are gonna own a nice to have, you might as well have a really nice one.
The Galvin Green Lars Interface jacket is a full zip that is made with super light material. Galvin Green does not really tell you what the material is, but I have never been disappointed. Each Galvin Green piece I own is rock star status. The jacket, in particular, is super light and because it is short sleeve, provides excellent mobility. The days I wore it this spring, I was impressed with its ability to shed wind and light rain. Basically, a perfect piece to keep in your bag in spring and fall.
Style wise, Galvin Green tends to be on the technical side, rather than softer tones. How Bernard Langer is not on Galvin Green staff is beyond me. Whenever I think of Galvin Green, I t think of technical German Players. The Lars Interface jacket is no exception with a complex design on the sleeves and back. This is a brand that values research and performance fabrics. The design is there to let everyone know it did not come from Rock Bottom Golf. No, this is the real deal.
So at $209, yes, it better be the real deal. This particular item came from Function 18 which is a UK based company that carries some of the world’s top performance golf brands. For me, I love golf and it is the one place I am willing to spend money. My philosophy is that if I am going to get a specialized club or piece of apparel, I might as well get the best and have it for years to come.
So I am talking to you, the guy about to pick up the Footjoy windbreaker that might as well be a plastic bag flapping in the wind. Sure it was $29.95, but it looks like ass and is about as well fitted as the sport coat you bought in 1988. Size wise, the Galvin Green Lars Interface is European cut, but you can still get your regular size. The difference is that it will actually fit you correctly.
So that’s it, I am now a member of the short sleeve jacket club. While it will never be a staple of my regular round, I will absolutely use it on a regular basis in the spring and fall for many years to come.
